A Story Born From Experience, Not Trends
Penny Black Organic was founded by hairdresser Nanette Barter, whose career began at just 16 years old. Even in those early years, Nanette noticed something troubling: colleagues around her were becoming increasingly unwell. Autoimmune disease, bowel disorders and cancer were far too common in the industry.
After being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 30, followed by breast cancer, Nanette knew instinctively that the daily exposure to toxic chemicals in conventional hair products could not be ignored. When her daughter Laura decided to enter the hairdressing profession, Nanette was determined to ensure history would not repeat itself.
This deeply personal journey became the catalyst for change.
Australia’s First Certified Green Salon — And Beyond
Seeking answers, Nanette and Laura travelled to Copenhagen to study Green Salon Certification, returning home to open Australia’s first Certified Green Salon. This commitment required a complete rethinking of every ingredient, process and product used within the salon. In 2024, Nanette and Laura made the pivotal decision to sell their highly successful salon, allowing them to fully focus on their next chapter — translating this same uncompromising philosophy into the foundation of Penny Black Organic Hair Care.
