My passion for hairdressing has taken me to where I am today. I started my hairdressing career at the age of 16, Owning two hair and beauty salons - based in the U.K. In 2008 I relocated to the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Where I have created the only certified green salon in the southern hemisphere. I am so proud to be able to share my passion and knowledge with my team and clientele.
I frequently get asked “Why become a certified green salon and what is the difference between a green salon and an organic salon?” Our industry is a very archaic industry – unfortunately there has not been much change within the raw materials used in products for decades. The hair industry has been left behind in creating cleaner products that are safer for the consumer and our environment. As a green salon, this is our main focus- avoiding toxic chemicals.
My own health concerns took me to investigate a green salon concept that offers a much cleaner chemical approach to hairdressing. There are only 70 green salons in the world, and being able to provide this on the Sunshine Coast I feel is a great achievement. My own health has improved dramatically since we made the change over 5 years ago, which has allowed me to continue working within the hair industry.
My vision is to inspire other Hair and Beauty experts in our industry to make the change and educate themselves in the toxicity of raw materials used and to be able to make a clean, transparent safer choice for themselves and clientele. I look forward to the next chapter in my career educating and introducing more sustainable and beneficial products for the hair, skin and environment.
Hi everyone I’m Laura. I am an internationally trained cidesco beauty therapist with over 11 years in the industry. I have been with Penny Black since the beginning. Nanette and I travelled all around the world to discover the green concept and to upskill on the chemical side of things. In doing so we have met many amazing green chemists and environmentalist’s that we still work with today. Being able to create a certified green concept salon here in Australia gave Nanette and I the opportunity to create a safe haven for all things hair and beauty not only for ourselves but the team and our amazing clientele.
With my creative passion I enjoy brow sculpting and nail care and offering a relaxing scalp massage in our shampoo lounge. I love spending time with my family and furkid, including walks, bike rides and being active outdoors and making the most of what the beautiful Sunshine Coast has to offer. I look forward to passing on my green positivity and passion amongst the community and further more.
Hey, I’m Bridget I have 17 years experience in hairdressing and I’ve worked for Nanette since 2013, after finding out about what she was doing and aiming for I just knew I had to work for her so I set up a meeting and basically begged her for a job. I was lucky enough to be taken on board and be apart of the certified green salon concept right from the start.
I have been the the salon manager since 2015 but still spend 80% of my time working on the salon floor and I would say my strengths and passion is colour correction, cutting long hair, educating the team and our clients on the certified green salon concept and providing the absolute best experience possible. I have 2 amazing kiddies Levi and Molly and 2 giant fur babies Stella and Bruce who are both rescue dogs so that doesn’t leave much time for any hobbies outside of work and mum life but if I get to choose an activity I just love being at the beach.
I feel so grateful to work with such an amazing team and be able to experience all of the amazing services everyone provides my absolute favourite thing to do on the rare occasion when we have some spare time is have one of our famous signature hair treatments because our scalp massages are epic!!!
Hello I’m Megan, I have 10 years experience in the hairdresser industry and have been at Penny Black Organic since 2014. I myself like a lot of our clientele have suffered bad reactions to traditional salon products. Waking up almost everyday with huge welts on my eyelids not knowing that I was being exposed to toxic chemicals. I was lucky enough to have started the non toxic approach early in my career.
My favourite part about working at Penny Black Organic is definitely the culture and atmosphere as well as our ethos and aim for a greener and cleaner industry. Being able to sit down with each client and educate them about the importance of what we are doing. I would say that I am an all rounder in the salon. I enjoy all aspects of hairdressing but would say my strength is foiling. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. Beach days in summer and sitting around my fire pit on winter nights.
Hello I'm Chloe and i have nearly 8 years experence in the hairdressing industry have been working at penny black organic hair and spa since january 2019. What brought me to the salon was the non toxic approach to hairdressing. Born and raised on the sunshine coast I'm passionate about living a healthy lifestyle.
Growing up I've always been really creative and started hairdressing at 15yrs old.
My favourite part of hairdressing is providing space and comfort for my clients to feel pampered and looked after with attention to detail. I love creative colouring and balayage is one of my favourite techniques. When not in the salon I like to spend my time with my dachshund Lucy and in the outdoors either climbing mountains, bushwalking or down by the beach. I love yoga, boxing and expressing myself in art and music. I'm so grateful to be working in such an amazing space with a happy supportive team that feels like family. My favourite service at penny black would have to be anything in our dark room shampoo lounge, or the magnesium float tank.
Hi I’m Chris, I’ve been a hairdresser for 17 years. Originally from the UK, I’ve been living in Australia for 12 years after a three week holiday turned into a permanent move. I’ve been part of a young artistic team and worked on fashion shows and shoots both in the UK and Australia and love the variety and creativity this industry has to offer. I’ve been a part of the Penny Black team for just over two years and feel very fortunate to find a salon where the values and ethics stand for more than superficial beauty. I specialise in cutting and love to cut short hair, working with hair growth patterns and creating shapes that flow with the natural movement of the hair allows me to introduce more creative thinking and artistic technicality into my work.
I believe that a lot of women uphold a great deal of their femininity in the length of the hair, and by wearing it shorter takes courage and ownership of their individuality and self confidence. I love the natural beauty the Sunshine Coast has to offer and choose to spend my free time walking in the bush and enjoying the ocean.
